Sage Publishing

The client

Founded in 1965, Sage is a global academic publisher of books and journals. In recent years it has been expanding its suite of digital products and services, all aimed at academics and researchers. Sage is known for its commitment to the social sciences, so attracts an audience who are working with lots of quantitative and qualitative data.

The challenge

Senior commissioning editor Michael Gill wanted to bring a different perspective to the mainly academic audience for the Sage Research Methods digital platform. Our founder Alan Rutter came up with a proposed set of short tutorial videos to showcase different aspects of data visualisation. An additional challenge was that filming needed to take place during the middle of the Covid lockdowns, so it wasn't possible to use a studio.

The results

We've now produced sixteen different short videos for the Sage platform. These were all filmed remotely, with Sage providing the equipment and Alan working remotely with a producer to check lighting and audio. We've covered 'Presenting data to non-specialist audiences', 'Visualising large datasets', 'Beyond graphs and charts', and quick dives into the best use cases for different graphs and charts.

Testimonial

“I was looking to commission videos for a collection of learning resources on Data Visualization for the Higher Education market and found Alan through the training courses he runs. He was very much up to the challenge of remote filming during the COVID pandemic and was able to bring his expertise to bear with suggesting multiple video topics. He really got to grips with the brief in presenting digestible instructional films with good illustrative examples. We’ve had a great response for the Data Visualization collection and couldn’t be happier with Alan’s contribution.”
